Ayurveda | The world's oldest system of medicine originating from India over 4,000 years ago.

Ayurveda recognizes the powerful, healing connection between mind and body, practicing individualized medicine according to one's prakruti/constitution and Doshas, our individual mind-body type. There are 3 different Doshas, each governed by 2 of the 5 universal elements.

The 3 Doshas, Vata, Pitta, Kapha, begin to manifest at time of conception and represent the energies of our bodies, minds, habits, skin types and influence our personal well being. We each manifest qualities of all 3 doshas but usually have 1-2 that are most dominant. By discovering your Dosha type, you are able to care for yourself on a more intuitive and individual level. I will lightly cover the basics of Doshas in lifestyle and skincare influence below but for healing and true change on a deep level, you should dedicate time to work with a qualified practitioner.

By becoming familiar with your Dosha, you can treat and nourish skin on a more tailored level, helping to discover why you may be dealing with a certain skin condition. For example, a Vata acne imbalance will be treated differently than a Kapha skin imbalance, so on and so fourth.

I recommend taking a few different tests to compare Dosha results and you should be able to discover your dominant Dosha(s). You will begin notice your thinking patterns, habits and body type habits aligning with your Dosha type(s). This is a basic guideline on everyday habits you can incorporate into your lifestyle to balance your Doshas and wellbeing. Check out MAPI's Dosha quiz here ---> http://www.mapi.com/doshas/dosha-test/index.html and below you will find simplified Doshic descriptions along with skincare and lifestyle tips for each.

Vata | Air & Space |  Vata Dosha represents movement and is dry, light, cold, mobile, quick, changeable and clear. Vata is wind. Vata rules the forehead. Vata skin is delicate and thinner in nature.

Vata skin tends towards a dryer, easily dehydrated, delicate, thin skin type and accelerated aging process. Vata skin is to be nourished and nurtured. Use gentle, plant based and high quality oils. Avoid heavy exfoliation products, retin A and use hydroxy acids carefully in order to prevent thinness and irritation of the skin. Keep the mind grounded and balanced and add routine into your life, such as a proper skin routine, meal schedule and sleep schedule. Add healthy fats to your diet, daily ghee intake and foods that increase ojas. Cook all foods and avoid a cold, raw diet. Drink room temperature water and warm tea throughout the day.

Pitta | Fire & Water | PItta represents fire and transformation. Pitta is hot, sharp, mobile, liquid and heat. Agni, our digestive fire, is Pitta and the most important factor in keeping our skin nourished from the inside out. Pitta rules the cheeks. Pitta skin is slightly oily, soft and glowing when in balance.

Pitta skin tends towards more sensitivities and can become easily inflamed. Pitta skin should be soothed, nourished and cooled. Take extra care to protect in sun, as heat aggravates Pitta.  Avoid hot and spicy foods that increase heat in the skin/body. Manage stress levels with calming activities and breathwork to control fiery emotions. Use rosewater to calm and hydrate skin, avoid harsh exfoliation and although Pitta skin is strong, it must be treated as sensitive skin due to its fire nature. Fire transforms and can be transformed quickly into inflammation when treated aggressively. Acne is Pitta, fire under the skin.

Kapha | Water & Earth | Kapha represents, water, earth and stability. Kapha is grounded but can be sluggish, slow moving, damp and heavy when out of balance. Kapha skin is moist, thick, oily and plump in nature. A balanced Kapha complexion has a warm, peachy and supple glow but can quickly become stagnant and congested when unbalanced. Kapha rules the chin.

Kapha skin is prone to congestion, oily skin concerns and accumulating ama (toxins) under the skin. Kapha skin should be cleansed thoroughly but gently twice a day, exfoliated weekly and treated with clay masques for excess oil. Kapha skin should be gently stimulated with focus on lymphatic drainage to avoid water retention and puffiness. Kapha needs movement and stimulation to stay balanced. Avoid heavy, oily and slow to digest foods. Avoid over eating and opt for an abundance of fresh fruit and lightly cooked vegetables.

TRi-Doshic Skin Care tips for all Dosha types. | Healthy water intake, including starting your day with at least 2 glasses of room temperature/warm water, tongue scrapping in the a.m to remove toxins accumulated during sleep, keep a balanced schedule, manage your stress and do not let things fester, use products formulated for your individual Dosha, create healthy sleep habits and patterns, no technology an hour before bed to naturally induce melatonin production, rise with the sun, follow natural circadian rhythms and naturally, food as thy medicine.

Ayurveda is seemingly complex yet quite simple at the same time. By slowing down, getting back to our roots and developing healthy habits, patterns and lifestyle choices, we become more in tune with our body, mind and spirits. The more in balance with your Dosha, the more aligned and elevated you live.

Full Moon + New Year + New Habits

By: Ginger

This new year isn’t trying to hold back. We’re stepping through with every possible opportunity we can. With the full moon on the first in Cancer (does anyone else feel like they need to be more grounded?) it’s time to focus on our home. This is where we take what we need from. It’s more than just comforts. It’s a place of balance. My full moon ritual for this cycle is based on digging in so we can place roots that go so deep change moves through us.

Clay Mask

I’ve had a lot of goals come to the surface since the last dark moon. Emotions can and generally do run high during the full moon. This will also be a Supermoon. It’s closer so it will appear 30% brighter. Let’s go with the energy will be stronger too. Let’s come out of this with a solid plan of action.

With my ritual we’ll need Canela Prayers Clay Mask, your choice of tea* (I’ll leave a personal recipe at the end if you’d like a suggestion) a mirror, favorite incense, piece of paper and pencil. While pulling on your own inner needs apply the Canela Prayers Clay Mask. This will bring in the earth element that’s critical for grounding. Set up your incense on your mirror. Get your tea going. You’re currently creating your space, this is all yours, only your energy is here. Let yourself relax into this.
Now remove your mask. You’ve detoxed your skin...pulled impurities away. The Bentonite Clay has left your skin smelling and feeling amazing. Hold onto that moment just for awhile.

Once your tea is ready, it’s now time to get comfortable in front of the mirror and paper. Light the incense and sip your tea. Whenever you’re ready start listing your goals of 2018. Anything that’s bubbled to the surface.
I often use tarot to direct my thoughts and the Empress card came forward when I sat down to find my focus for this ritual. Growing roots (which will come from last years seeds) will bring prosperity and abundance. Balancing home life. Finding peace in decisions, and searching for your center.

Even as I list those out I had a heavy moment of “well couldn’t we just learned to cook better?” Life has a sense of humor somewhere. I’m practically chugging tea at this point too. How do we balance our home? List the chaos that’s there. Uncertain schedules? Loved ones making choices that’s not playing to the team? Frustrations from a significant other? Or are you unhappy with how you handle things? Remember to keep in mind how the things you write down are making you feel, there’s a solution in that.
What brings negativity to your life? Outside forces. Ones that are selfish and just need
something from you. Things that demand way more then they are willing to give. And when they have to give... it’s a battle? There’s no easy answer here. It’s catching the details and making quick decisions. When it comes to ourselves being the one not taking action and creating the chaos it’s time to look at motivation and why. We want our seeds to grow, not have the energy pulled away from them. If it’s outside forces it’s time to cut ties. If it’s yourself...look for inner strength and motivate yourself to change.

Finding your center starts with how you care for your body, mind and soul. Making healthier choices, being mindful and knowledgeable about what you need. Through self care such as the products we put on our body, the food that we eat... It’s how Gaia speaks to us. Nurtures us.

How to start my day happy?

By Ginger:

Beauty is more than a perception. It's easy to work on the outside but how can we do more; how can we focus on the inside?

Self-Love-Morning-Rituals.jpg

Having a morning ritual that is dedicated to you is vital in today's world. Having the chance to tap into a primitive energy that provides the base of a positive self-image is critical for our standard of living. Once the alarm goes off we're pressed into motion to get our day going. Taking just a little time to slow down, to focus will set the intentions for your day. With your own ritual of self-care, you will bring awareness and consistency to your day.

Products, styles, and the choices we make every day define us. Push yourself to go further. Why not find a deeper root, one that is actually created for you. Wise Root Living is that. Created with intention, created to mean and be more. Using ingredients we can all tap into to find our meaning. This is where growth happens.

Most wake up and start the kurig, which is a good first step. What ensues after that? Add a little something more. Light a candle or some incense to get your favorite scent in the air.

Self-confidence_blog_post

When you change the environment through a sense you're creating your space. This is sacred and helps keep you whole. Take some time to just focus on you. Think about your intentions today. All demands on hold. Where are you? I like to wash my face with Diosa Rituals then sit in my favorite chair and watch outside for awhile. Splash my Mist of Gaia and breath in the power of its aromatherapy. Then use Caribeña Glow moisturizer and seek a calm demeanor. 30 minutes of process time can change the whole tone to the day. This is where self-care begins. Conscious action combined with consciously taking the time for your core needs.

Frankincense is a sacred scent and oil. It relieves stress and inflammation. My anxiety starts when I'm waking up and trying to organize my day.

The scent instantly relaxes me. Rose is packed full of antioxidants, is an anti-strident and antiseptic which in the most simplest terms saves my oily skin from breakouts. But it's more than that. When I start my ritual rose has ties to positive self-image. It's beauty that can bite back through thorns. It's knowing I choose what's best for me through conscious choices.

This is just one way to take a step back. Given the way this world has evolved and moved towards mass production of what we want; there's so much beauty in what we need. Our environment provides so much for us. By turning back to the essence of natural ingredients we pull the energy from Gaia. Find our roots and use that to turn our focus inward. Starting a ritual is one step. Using natural ingredients adds the next layer. Wisdom comes from being awaken to what and how you're doing something. When it's natural products used in your self-created sacred space the focus and intent are all on you. You awaken your inner beauty. Your body isn't processing any filler agents that it doesn't naturally recognize. That is healthy. Let Gaia nurture your soul. That is being whole. Educating yourself grows Wise Roots.
